CS2 skin upgrade tactics: chances, formula and calculator
An upgrade puts your skins (or skins and balance) on a pricier item. The chance depends only on the price ratio, and a provably fair roll decides. Here is the formula, the chances for popular multipliers and tactics that actually work in Upgrader Simulator.
How an upgrade works
- Pick up to 6 of your items, or up to 5 items plus balance — that's the stake.
- Pick a target skin: the pricier it is compared with the stake, the lower the chance.
- Press «Upgrade»: a number from 0 to 99,999 is rolled. Inside the winning range — the skin is yours; outside — the stake is gone (sometimes with a consolation item).
Presets ×2, ×4, ×8, 35%, 55% and 75% pick the target for you. The maximum chance is 80%, the minimum 0.01%.
The upgrade chance formula
chance = stake price ÷ target price × 1.03
The 1.03 multiplier is the simulator's bonus: chances are 3% above the plain price ratio, so a ×2 upgrade has 51.5%, not 50%. The 80% cap is reached at ×1.29.
| Multiplier | Stake → target, coins | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| ×1.5 | 1,000 → 1,500 | 68.67% |
| ×2 | 1,000 → 2,000 | 51.5% |
| ×3 | 1,000 → 3,000 | 34.33% |
| ×4 | 1,000 → 4,000 | 25.75% |
| ×5 | 1,000 → 5,000 | 20.6% |
| ×8 | 1,000 → 8,000 | 12.88% |
| ×10 | 1,000 → 10,000 | 10.3% |
| ×20 | 1,000 → 20,000 | 5.15% |
| ×50 | 1,000 → 50,000 | 2.06% |
| ×100 | 1,000 → 100,000 | 1.03% |

Upgrade tactics
- The ×2 ladder. The smoothest game: about a coin flip each time, the balance moves gently.
- Stake a share of the balance. Keep each upgrade within 5–10% of your balance: even at 50%, five losses in a row happen about once in 32 tries.
- Merge small skins. Put up to 6 cheap skins on one expensive target instead of keeping dust.
- Low chances are a lottery ticket. ×10–×20 means 5–10%: a shot at a big win, keep it small.
- Don't chase losses. Doubling after a loss (martingale) hits the chance cap and drains the balance.
- Change your client seed if you like. It doesn't change the odds, but proves the result could not be picked in advance.
Upgrade battles: the same chance, against players
In upgrade battles players put skins into one pot and each one's chance equals their share of it. The winner takes everything.
Why the result can't be rigged
Before you play, the site shows the SHA-256 hash of the server seed. A roll is computed from the server seed, your client seed and the bet number (nonce). After a seed change you get the seed itself and can recompute every roll — see Provably fair.
Upgrade questions
Which upgrade chance is the best?
Mathematically they are all equal: the chance is proportional to the price, so the expected value is the same at ×2 and at ×20. What differs is variance: around 50% (×2) plays smoothly, small chances give rare big wins and long losing streaks.
Is the upgrader rigged?
Every roll is provably fair: the server seed's hash is shown before you play, you set the client seed, and after a seed change you can recompute any result yourself.
What is compensation?
When an upgrade fails, there is a 25% chance to get a consolation item worth about 10% of the stake.
Can I upgrade several skins at once?
Yes: up to 6 items in one bet, or up to 5 items plus some balance. The chance uses their total price.
Does doubling after a loss work?
No. The chance is capped at 80%, and 5–6 losses in a row at ×2 happen regularly — doubling empties the balance fast. Keep the stake a steady share of your balance.
